Always the heaviest camper in my division my family credits my tuchus and zaftig figure to my Argentine genes I stuck out like a sore. Once regarded as a shameful place where parents sent obese children to suffer near-starvation diets and extreme exercise regimes the concept of the weight loss camp for kids has been rebranded in 2018 as a fun place for children to get healthy. Like so many other Jewish kids I started going to Jewish sleepaway camp at age 8. Most of the kids were sent there against their will. Kids are rarely at a fat camp because they want to be there. Another camper was literally sent home for sneaking in a package of Pop-Tarts. Media exposure has helped kids and teens become more accepting of the struggle against childhood obesity. The special followed five different campers as they navigated the highs and lows of spending a summer at fat camp.
In 2006 the two-hour MTV documentary Fat Camp took us to Camp Pocono Trail a weight loss camp in Pennsylvanias Poconos Mountains where teens were trying to shed pounds amid summer flings.
These campers dealt with. Fat Camp Was More Jewish Than My Jewish Camp. Most of the kids were sent there against their will. However fat camp is hardly a restrictive prison.
